Acupuncture originated in China nearly 2500 years ago as a holistic therapy meant to treat the whole patient rather than a specific condition. At Floating Lotus, we create custom treatments to help with pain, stress and anxiety, sleep and digestion and so much more!

Once the needles are in, most of our patients feel a sense of deep relaxation. For days after the session, patients experience reduction of symptoms and a zen like attitude towards the stress of NYC life.

What is Acupuncture

Acupuncture is the insertion of very thin, flexible needles into specific points located on the body’s energy meridians. Chinese doctors have spent over two thousand years mapping out the locations of these points, and modern electromagnetic research has confirmed their locations.

A simple treatment that restores balance to your body

Acupuncture stimulates the body’s life force or qi. This qi is flowing through specific pathways throughout the body. Physical or emotional trauma, improper nutrition, stress, and environmental factors can block or alter the balance of qi. By stimulating acupuncture points, the flow of qi can be changed and blockages can be dissolved. Only when the qi is restored to balance will optimal health return.

Benefits for your entire body

Local placement of the acupuncture needles along the channels, or meridians, stimulates an anti-inflammatory response at the site of inflammation. This includes the treatment of fevers, rashes, swollen joints, inflammatory bowel, asthma, and stomach ulcers.

The interaction between the acupuncture needles and pain receptors in the skin create a local, spinal, and centrally mediated response to simulate the body to release natural pain killers called endorphins. Pain syndromes that are treated by acupuncture include headache, PMS, arthritis, muscle spasm, neck and back pain, sciatica, nerve pain, and post-operative pain.

Acupuncture is not just for pain!

Stress reduction

Not only does acupuncture stimulate the release of endorphins, but it can also affect the emotional triggers in the brain’s limbic system providing deep relaxation and a sustained feeling of well-being. This in turn is extremely effective in appetite control, emotional eating, and weight loss.

Immune enhancement

Certain points are clinically proven to promote and transform lymphocytes, promote interferon production, and promote red-blood cell production. This is extremely effective if undergoing radiation or chemotherapy for the treatment of cancer. Acupuncture is also widely used for the side effects of radiation and chemotherapy.

Gynecological complaints

Acupuncture is able to harmonize hormonal secretions by regulating the endocrine and autonomic nervous system. This may include menopausal symptoms, infertility, irregular menstruation, and PMS.

Acupuncture for Acute and Chronic Low Back Pain

Whether your low back pain is caused by muscle spasms, disc disease, nerve irritation, arthritis, or pregnancy, Floating Lotus has effective treatments to help manage your pain. In many clinical studies, acupuncture has been shown to reduce local inflammation of muscle tissue, promote blood circulation and tissue repair to injured areas.

Acupuncture also induces your body into releasing natural opioids, or pain killers, to reduce pain. Your acupuncture treatments and massage sessions will be customized to your specific needs depending on your condition. Once your pain has been reduced, an exercise, strengthening and stretching program may be implemented.

Neck and Shoulder Relief

One of the best and most successful ways to alleviate neck and shoulder pain is with acupuncture treatments, coupled with floatation therapy. The neck and shoulder region is a very delicate area. Susceptible to cold weather, the muscles easily stiffen and problems ensue: headaches, neck pain, and even a higher frequency of cold viruses. Acupuncture is a simple and effective way to clear away viral infections and alleviate pain, pressure, and inflamed muscle tissue.

Several studies and neuroimaging have demonstrated the connection between the brain and what happens when the body is stimulated by acupuncture needles. Not only is there a reduction in pain and inflammation, but the immune system is triggered as well. There are also many herbal medicines, supplements, and topical gels that are extremely effective at reducing pain and preventing further injury. Whether your treatments are for acute muscle spasms, illness, or headaches, acupuncture and Floatation therapy are an excellent choice for better health.

Headaches & Migraines

One of the most important steps to overcoming headaches is determining what type of headaches you are suffering from. In your initial consultation, we will go through your history and determine whether the root cause of your headaches is stress, hormone imbalance, neck and shoulder tension, nerve entrapment, poor diet, muscle spasms or even chronic scar tissue.

One of the many gifts Chinese medicine offers is the ability to provide a very specific diagnosis as to type of headache or migraine a patients suffers from. This enables us to provide the patient with a very individualized course of treatment. The root cause will inform what type of treatment will be most effective for your particular situation. This may include acupuncture, Floatation therapy, cupping, massage, yoga and Chinese herbs.

Whether you are coming in for an acute attack of migraine/headache, or you’re coming in for the prevention of headaches, acupuncture is very effective. We have seen within a course of treatment, patients will see a decrease in intensity, duration, and frequency. The length of a course of treatment will be determined by how long you have been suffering and what type of headache or migraine you’re coming in for.

About the Floating Lotus Acupuncture Treatment

Evaluation and Diagnosis:

Our diagnosis is determined in part using methods similar to other health care practitioners: asking patients for a thorough history of their health, diet, exercise patterns and chief complaints.

We also use unique diagnostic techniques, such as taking the patient’s pulse on both wrists and observing the tongue, complexion and other signs. The three pulses felt on each wrist are thought to correspond to certain organs and functions.

We spend time with you during your initial session to fully evaluate every aspect of your body and mind. This session lasts about 90 mins. Follow up sessions are approximately 50 mins.

The Needles:

Modern acupuncture needles are stainless steel, between one-half and three inches long, ultra-fine and quite flexible. They are pre-sterilized, nontoxic and disposable (single use). When the needles are tapped into the skin, there may not be any sensation. Much depends on the location (hands and feet tend to be more sensitive), the condition being treated and the the technique that is used. Needles are typically placed in several points and are usually left in for about 20-40 minutes. The goal is to normalize the circulation of Qi and blood by stimulating the energy point, which encourages the body’s natural healing process.

The Treatment Process:

The number of treatments depends upon the duration, severity and nature of your health condition. Some conditions are treated in a single session. Others may require a series of sessions over time.

Chinese Medicine is more than Acupuncture:

Additional Techniques used may include moxibustion (burning herbs to heat acupuncture points), cupping, auricular therapy (ear acupuncture), Tui na (Chinese Massage) and essential oils.
