Floatation for Athletic Performance

Athletes around the world use floatation to prepare for and recover from sports activities. While you may think that lying on your bed or sofa would give your muscles a rest, gravity is still applying vast amounts of stress on various parts of the body. Your body must maintain tone while holding itself against that gravity. While floating, however, you are able to experience the lowest state of gravity – without leaving Earth. This total relaxation gives every muscle a break from fighting gravity, and the benefits can be startling.

Sports Recovery

Floating improves the rate of recovery after physical exercise. What normally takes a long period of time, often days for recovery from strenuous activities, can be compressed into a few float sessions.By relieving the stresses of gravity, floating takes the weight off strained bones, joints and muscles, and increases the efficiency of the blood circulating through the body. Recovery time after injuries can be dramatically improved.

Floatation Aids Visualization to Enhance Sports Performance

Athletes who use floatation in conjunction with visualization techniques have experienced rapid improvement in their sporting performances.

As the brain enters the theta wave state, commonly experienced in deep meditation, it becomes more open to suggestion. The central nervous system can essentially be trained to produce the ‘perfect performance’.

Take a look at our Floatation Research Center where we have collected a number of scientific studies from experts in sporting and medical institutions who have carried out lots of research in controlled experiments. The quantifiable results have even led some to claim that an hour in the float tank using visualization and imagery is better than 10 hours of repetitive field practice.

What to Expect/Preparation

The beauty of the Floating Lotus Float session is its simplicity. You do not need to prepare in any way before coming for your float. Just show up, let go and float away.

We provide everything you’ll need for the float session in your private float room, including: Fresh towels, ear plugs, shampoo and soap, hair dryer.

Before Your Float Session

Try to avoid shaving on the day of your float session. Because the water has a high salt conten, some people find it irritating to freshly shaved skin. We do provide Vaseline in every room for you to cover any small cuts and grazes. If necessary, this can help to cover shaved skin too.

Using The Float Room

After a quick shower, you enter the tank and ambient music is played for the first few minutes. This is followed by 50 – 80 minutes of total silence. As the session comes to an end, the music is played again so that you know that you should leave the tank. The door to the tank is fully controllable from within. You can choose whether to float with the door open or closed. There is also an interior light for beginners or for those who don’t enjoy being in the dark. Almost all users, however, float with the light off.

After Your Float Session

Take a shower to wash away the salt from your skin. Take a few minutes to get changed and come out to relax in our sitting area. This is a great time to integrate some of the powerful experiences that you have just had in the float room. Make a commitment to float on a regular basis – each session builds on the last ones.

How To Float

Welcome to Floating Lotus! There are a few things we’d like to share with you prior to floating just so you’re aware of them. We advise to follow as many of them as possible to get the best experience out of your float.

  • State of Mind
The more relaxed and calm you allow yourself to be, the better your float experience. Let go of everything going on in your life and prepare to float away. While you may not know what to expect, trust that you are safe and protected in the float room.
  • Breathing
Breathing is your tool to a relaxed and calm mind. When in the float tank, allow your breathing to pass through your nose. Start with deep breaths and allow your body to settle. Eventually you will be able to let go and observe – your body will always remember to breathe, there is no need to control your breath.
  • Positions
    • Comfort in the float room can be accomplished with two different positions: With your arms at your side, palms down. With your arms over-head, palms up.
    • Play around with the two positions to see which feels better for your body. Also, try to position your body in the middle of the tank to avoid “ping-ponging” from side to side. To do this, brace your arms and legs against the sides of the room to position your torso in the middle, and once you feel the water to be calm, slowly and evenly retract your limbs back to the mid-line of your body.
    • Try not to generate any momentum from either side so that you remain in the middle and avoid the distraction of bumping into the side. Once you like your position and feel comfortable try to remain still and consciously relax all of your muscles.
  • Let Go
Don’t “try” to do anything in the float room. You don’t need to force something to happen and you shouldn’t expect something to happen. You may fall asleep or you may find yourself in a deep dreamlike state. Just be present with whatever arises.Repetition of a focus word such as “peace”, “relax”, or “let go” spoken in your mind in unison with your exhalation can help at first. Most importantly, just let go of conscious control.

  • Completion
At the end of the float, the main float room light will go back on. Carefully step back into the shower and turn on the lights again, using the dimmer on the wall. Rinse your body and shampoo/condition your hair. Be sure to rinse out your ears thoroughly. After exiting the room, you can expect to feel lighter and relaxed, with a mind that seems noticeable less cluttered. You will exit with a heightened sense of awareness and what is described as “laser focus”.

Floating During Pregnancy

Pregnancy and Birth magazine rated Floatation Therapy a 10 out of 10 as a useful pregnancy therapy.

Floatation Therapy for pregnant women within the 2nd and 3rd trimesters (after a medical clearance from your doctor) can bring you to a much needed state of relaxation and pain relief not found outside of the float room. Floating is most valuable during the third trimester of pregnancy, when the weight is putting uncomfortable pressure on your lungs and organs, making it difficult to breathe and sleep.

Floatation temporarily removes the strain of pregnancy weight. By floating in our zero gravity float rooms, you can escape the added weight that you have been carrying around and take the strain off of your body and spine. Floating also promotes excellent sleep, a lovely sense of well being, and can help with all the aches and pains normally associated with pregnancy.

Floating in a floatation tank can help the pregnant mom to be, literally float through the pregnancy with a level of calm and comfort, and our Epsom salt solution will decrease inflamation. Floating has been proven to help other common conditions of late-stage pregnancy- insomnia, depression and anxiety- by decreasing cortisol levels and encouraging the production of endorphins.

Some say that there is an amazing ‘mirror effect’ in which the unborn baby is floating in the womb of the mother, and the mother is floating in the buoyant float room. This bond of floating together can be spiritually uplifting and deepening the connection between mother and baby.

Check with your doctor or midwife to see if floating is right for you. We do not recommend floating for women in the first trimester of pregnancy.

AcuFloat Treatments

For centuries, millions of people around the world have used acupuncture to soothe the mind and heal the body. This ancient art carefully stimulates different points that awaken your body’s innate healing energy.

Floatation and acupuncture are the perfect combination when done together. That is why we created the AcuFloat Treatment at Floating Lotus. A gentle acupuncture treatment after your float session allows your mind and body to fully integrate the benefits of your float. While floating itself provides a variety of positive benefits, our experience has been that acupuncture after a float session significantly magnifies its effects.

First you will enter your private Floatation room for a 60 minute float session. Following your float, your acupuncture treatment will start with a brief discussion about the various issues you are dealing with, followed by a 30 minute treatment tailored to those needs. As your mind drifts off into a calm meditative state, your body will integrate the acupuncture to its deepest levels.
